The School Resource Officer (SRO) Program is the next step in Community Oriented Policing (COP). The SROis an asset used by the community and the school in an attempt toaddress situations in the lives of students in a manner other than thejudicial system, if possible.
TheSchool Resource Officer Program is a state and national acceptedprogram involving the placement of a law enforcement officer within theeducational environment. The officer is involved in variety ofsituations within the school aimed at prevention, deterrence and safety.In addition to being an active high profile law enforcement officer,the SRO is a resource for students, parents, teachers and administrators regarding law issues. Another duty for the SROis being the link to other service agencies that provide preventive andcounseling services within the school district. Working hand-in-handwith the principle and his staff, the SROassists with finding solutions to keep the school safe and to presentideas to assist in dealing with everyday problems that affect our youth.
The SROis a proactive approach to deal with the pressures that today’s youthfinds itself having to confront. This includes the use of the internet,alcohol, drug, and tobacco, along with peer pressure, gang activity, andsex. These situations are not only in the schools, but in the communityas well.
